It's for A Good Cause

Craig was pestering me about setting up a lemonade stand, but we don't have too many people that routinely walk by our house. Then he wanted to make a craft and sell it to the neighbors. I didn't want to squash his entrepreneurial spirit, but I also didn't want to just take some old junk to pawn it off on our neighbors. So, finally I convinced him that if he came up with a good cause--like donating the money to his school library for books--that I would help him design a craft that people might really find useful.

I remembered about a cool bookmark that my friend Marcie had made using beads at the top and bottom of a cord. Commercially they are sold as "book thongs" but I didn't want to go there. So, he made five of them and went around to sell them to the closest three neighbors and sold some to those who were home. The cutest part was we developed a "sales pitch" where he told them who he was, that he had handmade them, that the frog beads on them were because his school mascot is the Eriksson Frogs, and that he was saving the money to donate to his school library. "They are worth 50 cents," he would tell people. I said, "You have to show people how it works," so Anna started coming up with her own darn good spiel about how you can use it to save your spot when you can't finish a book, "See," she'd say, demonstrating, "it works perfectly!" So, their tag-team sales-pitch was born! And you have to admit, the bookmarks are pretty darn cute. So far, he has racked up $2.50, and is working toward $5.00 to give to Ms. Cotte, the librarian!
